PHO Rounds: Update on Ontario's new tick-borne diseases of public health significance

On July 1st, 2023, the tick-borne diseases (TBDs) anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Powassan virus infection became Diseases of Public Health Significance in Ontario. This PHO Rounds will provide an epidemiological summary of the first year of these diseases being reportable in Ontario. Laboratory experts will provide information on the proper tests to request for each pathogen and how to interpret laboratory results.

Intended audience: Health care practitioners, health unit staff

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases TBDs in Ontario
• Identify the test requisition and testing process for each TBD
• Interpret the laboratory results for each TBD and how they related to a case investigation

Presenter(s): Richard Mather, Antoine Corbeil, Shawn Clark, Samir Patel

Dr. Richard Mather, MD MSc CCFP FRCPC, is a public health physician in Health Protection at Public Health Ontario (PHO), where he supports communicable disease work including vector-borne diseases. He is an Assistant Professor (adjunct) at Queen’s University in the Department of Family Medicine and has an MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Antoine Corbeil, MD FRCPC DTM&H, is a medical microbiologist at Public Health Ontario, where he is the portfolio lead for parasitology, enteric bacteriology, point-of-care testing, and education.

Dr. Shawn Clark, MSc PhD FCCM, is a clinical microbiologist at Public Health Ontario where he is the portfolio lead for arbovirus diagnostics.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
