Skills for Health Promotion Workshop

The Public Health Ontario Health Promotion Capacity Building team is proud to present this series of four workshops on March 26 and 27, 2014. These introductory-level workshops will focus on program planning, policy development, evaluation and health communication.

 

We recommend these sessions for:

  • anyone new to health promotion seeking definitions, tools, resources and organized approaches to practice,
  • front line staff that need to choose, plan, implement and evaluate health promotion programs and services, and
  • team leaders who train or advise staff or volunteers about theory and evidence-informed processes.
 

In each of these four half-day workshops: 

  • we begin with an overview of key concepts and terms,
  • then briefly address the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of each step in the relevant model,
  • then bring the most challenging steps to life with examples, and
  • identify quality sources of more information, tools and describe our consultation service.
 
Attendees may register for any or all of the half day workshops in this series. You must complete a separate registration for each of the half day workshops that you want to attend.
 
 

Presenters

 

Sophie Rosa is a health promotion field support specialist, focusing on health communications. Rosa has a master’s of science degree in health studies and gerontology, a bachelor of science degree in psychology and a bachelor of arts degree in professional writing in English. Her professional background covers over 12 years of experience in health promotion, communications and strategic planning. She has led numerous national, provincial and municipal communication and public engagement initiatives for the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Previously, Rosa was a senior communications advisor in the public service and a freelance health writer. She began her career as a communications advisor for the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and as a health promotion specialist for the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. Rosa is fluently bilingual.

 

Kim Bergeron is a health promotion field support specialist, By-law and Policy Development, with the Health Promotion, Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention department at Public Health Ontario. Bergeron has over nineteen years of experience working within and alongside the Ontario public health system to facilitate multidisciplinary partnerships to create healthy, sustainable communities. She has provided consulting services to a number of provincial government programs working towards policy change, program development, and improving standards of practice. Bergeron holds a doctorate in health studies with a focus on health and the built environment from Queen’s University and a master of health studies from Athabasca University.  

 
 

Agenda and Learning Objectives   

Planning Health Promotion Programs

Day 1, 9:00 to 12:00
 
In this workshop we will introduce participants to a six-step framework for planning in the context of health promotion. It includes: working with many stakeholders, addressing health in a broad context, and building upon community capacities. Participants will learn about health promotion planning through lectures, practical small group exercises, and a variety of learning materials.
 
Goal
To assist individuals and agencies to plan health promotion initiatives in organizational and community settings.
 
Objectives
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
  • apply the health promotion planning model to their projects;
  • develop goals, objectives and success indicators for a health promotion project; and
  • identify some promising solutions to common planning challenges.

Influencing Policy Change and Development

Day 1, 1:00 to 4:00
 
This workshop is for public and community health practitioners with an interest in policy as a health promotion strategy. During this workshop we will provide a practical, hands-on orientation to the process of developing and implementing health-promoting policies. A key topic will be building support for policy among key stakeholder groups.
 
Through small group exercises and a case study, we will address the development of community-wide policies, as well as policies for specific settings, such as workplaces and schools.
 
Goal
To assist individuals and agencies to plan and implement policy change initiatives.
 
Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
  • apply the policy development model in the context of community health needs and stakeholder interests;
  • identify strategies for building support among stakeholders; and
  • address key policy development challenges.

Evaluating Health Promotion Programs

Day 2, 9:00 to 12:00
 
In this half-day workshop we provide participants with the skills to begin planning an evaluation for a health promotion initiative. At the end of the half day workshop, participants will be able to contribute to the design of a comprehensive evaluation, based on an understanding of the specific context and stakeholder interests.
 
Goal 
To assist individuals and agencies to plan evaluations of health promotion initiatives.
 
Objectives
At the end of the session participants will be able to:
  • understand how to design a comprehensive evaluation, based on an understanding of health promotion, the specific context and evaluation types.
  • understand the importance of indicators in the evaluation process.

Developing Health Communication Campaigns

Day 2, 1:00 to 4:00
 
In this half-day workshop we provide an overview of 12 steps to developing health communication campaigns. This includes applying health communication at the individual, network, organizational and societal levels and integrating media, interpersonal, and events-based approaches. We will use a mix of presentations and hands-on exercises.
 
Goal
To assist individuals and agencies involved in health promotion initiatives to plan, implement and evaluate health communication campaigns.
 
Objectives
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
  • identify key steps in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a health communication campaign
  • systematically and critically assess health communication products and campaigns.
