I would like to take this opportunity in my final message as President and CEO of Public Health Ontario to thank all of you for your support for our organization. Many of you worked hard in the years preceding its creation to describe the need for such an agency, to articulate its mandate, and to get it established. You continued to support us through our early days as we got ourselves established, and have collaborated with our many initiatives. I have received many messages of congratulations and thanks for my role in the establishment of PHO. But it is I who must thank each and every one of you for your ongoing support and contributions to our success.
I would also like to thank the staff of PHO that has worked tirelessly to ensure our success, the current and former members of the Board of Directors who have provided us with the necessary guidance, and our partners in the Government of Ontario who have supported our accomplishments and provided the resources necessary for us to achieve our mission. Together we have been able to strengthen the public health sector in this province.
As I reflect on where the public health system was a decade ago, we can all be proud of our achievements. The 2003 report of the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health noted that success in public health would require a focus on four "Cs": clarity of mission, communication, collaboration, and coordination. We have been able to maintain our focus across the public sector on each of these important objectives. Many public health challenges lie ahead, in infectious and communicable diseases, environmental and occupational health, and health promotion, chronic diseases and injury prevention. But I am confident that we are much better prepared to deal with these issues and other anticipated and unanticipated threats to the population’s health.
Leaving Public Health Ontario has not been an easy decision. I will miss the opportunity to work with all of you as the public health sector continues to be strengthened in this province. I look forward to continuing to hear about your continuing successes in improving population health and reducing inequities in health.
