Antimicrobial resistance is a growing concern worldwide. The emergence of extensively- or pan-drug resistant strains is limiting our ability to treat infections. In this presentation, Dr. Mulvey will discuss a few of Canada’s national surveillance programs, focusing on the rates and molecular characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium difficile, drug-resistant Salmonella and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CPE). He will also discuss Public Health Agency of Canada’s recent discovery of CPE from imported frozen seafood in Canada and a Toronto study searching for CPE in sewage and the area watershed.

Presenter: Dr. Michael Mulvey
Dr. Mulvey is Chief of the Antimicrobial Resistance and Nosocomial Infections Laboratory in the Public Health Agency of Canada. He is co-director of the Canadian Integrated Program on Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance and the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program. He is also responsible for antimicrobial resistance surveillance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Streptococci. His research interests include the characterization of novel antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and the application of whole genome sequencing as a tool for molecular epidemiology.
