Bacillus anthracis - Confirmation
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Specimen Type:

​​Pure viable subculture of organism on blood or Columbia agar plate

Container/Kit:

​Most appropriate medium is blood or Columbia agar plate

Collection information:

​NA

Minimum volume required:

​NA

Requisition:

​Complete the Reference Bacteriology Requisition for identification and confirmation. Please be sure to complete all fields on the requisition, including:

• Test Requested
• Culture information (e.g. motility testing and haemolysis)
• Clinical/epidemiology
• Contact information

Limitation:

​None

SPECIMEN HANDLING
Preparation prior to transport:

​Label the specimen with at least 2 identifiers and place in a biohazard bag and seal.

NB: Culture must be viable. Use a fresh subculture and ship in conditions to ensure viability on receipt.

Bacillus anthracis must be handled in accordance with the Canadian Biosafety Standards and shipped in accordance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Special Instructions:

Sender must contact the Customer Service Centre at 416-235-6556 or 1-877-604-4567  by telephone prior to submission of the isolate.

TEST INFORMATION

Bacillus anthracis is confirmed using real-time-PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method.

TESTING FREQUENCY AND TURNAROUND TIME (TAT)

​TAT is up to 3 days. 

Urgent testing is available upon request by calling the Customer Service Centre 416-235-6556 or 1-877-604-4567.

REPORTING

Results are reported to the ordering physician or health care provider as indicated on the requisition.

 

Specimens that are positive for Bacillus anthracis are to be reported to the Medical Officer of Health as per the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
