Bordetella pertussis BP collection kit
To order Collection Kits or other PHOL Supplies complete the Requisition for Containers and Supplies. The form should be faxed to Public Health Ontario Laboratory, Toronto at 416-235-5753 or your local PHOL.
Complete all fields of the General Test Requisition Form. Ensure the following fields are completed if diagnostic testing is requested:• Symptoms • Onset date
The PCR transport medium is colourless. NB: Do not use Multi-organism transport medium which is pink.
Label the container with two identifiers and place specimen in biohazard bag and seal. Specimens should be stored at 2-8°C following collection and shipped to PHOL on ice packs. Maximum storage/transit time at 2-8 degrees C is within 5 days of collection.
Follow the instructions found in the Bordetella pertussis BP Kit Instruction Sheet. Specimens should be collected during the acute phase of illness.
Bordetella - respiratory specimens are tested by a (PCR)- Polymerase Chain Reaction test that detects Bordetella Pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis and Bordetella holmesi. The PCR is >99% specific, and more sensitive than routine culture.

The PCR is set up daily. TAT for PCR testing is up to 4 days.
Results are reported to the ordering physician or health care provider as indicated on the requisition.
