Food-borne Illness Testing

PHO performs laboratory testing for Public Health Units to support the investigation of food-borne illnesses or outbreak investigations. Public Health Inspector’s Guide to the Principles and Practices of Environmental Microbiology provides information on Environmental Microbiology testing, including:

  • Tests performed
  • Specimen collection and transportation instructions
  • Laboratory acceptance and rejection criteria
  • Test result interpretation

Updated laboratory food bacteriology requisition and reporting

On March 17, 2014 PHO implemented a new Food Bacteriology Requisition and reporting process. It automates reporting via our Laboratory Information System, resulting in faster provision of results via auto-fax and increased data for monitoring and surveillance.
