Hepatitis A – Serology
SPECIMEN REQUIREMENTS
Specimen Type:

​Serum

Container/Kit:

​Blood, clotted - vacutainer tubes (SST) 

Collection information:

​To order Collection Kits or other PHOL Supplies complete the Requisition for Containers and Supplies. The form should be faxed to Public Health Ontario Laboratory, Toronto at 416-235-5753 or your local PHOL.

Minimum volume required:

​5.0 ml blood or 1.0 ml serum

Requisition:

Complete all relevant fields of the General Test Requisition Form.

Detailed instructions for ordering Hepatitis A testing are available to assist you with completing the “Hepatitis Serology boxes” in section 3 of the General Test Requisition​

Limitation:

​Haemolysed, icteric, lipemic or microbially contaminated sera or plasma are not recommended for testing.

SPECIMEN HANDLING
Preparation prior to transport:

Centrifuge if using SST. Place specimen in biohazard bag and seal. Specimens should be stored at 2-8°C following collection and shipped to PHOL on ice packs.

TEST INFORMATION

Hepatitis A - Serology testing is performed on the Architect analyzer. The Hepatitis A IgM and Hepatitis A IgG assays are a chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) for the qualitative detection of IgG antibody and IgM antibody to Hepatitis A virus in human serum. 

Positive Hepatitis A IgM results are reported to the Medical Officer of Health as per Reportable Diseases Regulation.

TESTING FREQUENCY AND TURNAROUND TIME (TAT)

​Hepatitis A – Serology testing is performed daily Monday to Friday.

TAT is up to 3 days.

REPORTING

​Results are reported to the ordering physician or health care provider as indicated on the requisition.
