Dr. Vanessa Allen appointed chief, Medical Microbiology

Dr. Vanessa Allen assumes a new role on April 1, 2014 as chief, Medical Microbiology. In this role, Vanessa will lead the medical, scientific and academic functions in the Public Health Ontario Laboratories, and in partnership with the chief laboratory operations officer, provide overall leadership for PHOL.

Dr. Allen has been at PHO for six years as medical microbiologist and infectious disease specialist, taking on the role of acting medical director of PHOL in June 2013. Dr. Allen’s new role as chief, Medical Microbiology, positions PHO for continuing success, particularly as our largest laboratory moves to the Discovery District in downtown Toronto. It also strengthens the senior medical role within PHO’s entire network of eleven laboratories.

Dr. Allen contributes to key PHO leadership groups and providing leadership to the microbiology group at the laboratories. Her areas of expertise include bacterial sexually-transmitted infections and food- and water-borne bacterial diseases. She is co-chair of the Canadian Public Health Laboratory Network Water Food Safety and Enterics group, as well as the provincial multidrug-resistant gonorrhea working group. A clinical infectious diseases specialist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, she is also an assistant professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto.
