A case report involving chronic arsenic poisoning will be used to explore various facets of this fascinating toxicant, including historical, chemical, toxicologic, and clinical aspects. Emphasis will be placed on identification of environmental sources of exposure to help inform an approach to source identification for health care professionals and others with a stake in environmental public health.
Presenter: Dr. Vincent Spilchuk
Vincent Spilchuk (MA, MD, MScCH, FRCPC) is a specialist in internal medicine and subspecialist in occupational medicine. He maintains a diverse practice that includes providing occupational/environmental health expertise at Public Health Ontario (Environmental and Occupational Health), a clinical practice in occupational and environmental medicine at St. Mike’s Hospital, consultancy in occupational health for Trillium Health Partners (Mississauga), and as a locum physician seeing patients at various community hospitals in the GTA. He has a special interest in the areas of metals toxicology, hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), occupational hazards for health care workers, as well as medical education.
The Occupational and Environmental Health Seminar Series is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The series is also approved by Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI), and by the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists (CRBOH) for Registration Maintenance (RM) points.
