To paraphrase the famous words of Dr. Nancy Cox, “when you experience one influenza season, you experience one influenza season.” This session will examine the features of the 2016/2017 influenza season as well as discuss emerging issues in influenza and respiratory virus surveillance, vaccination and management. We will present an epidemiologic and virologic summary of the 2016/2017 influenza and respiratory virus season, as well as an overview of influenza vaccines available under Ontario’s Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP) for the 2017/2018 season. Finally, we will review the use of antiviral medications for influenza treatment and prevention.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the 2016/2017 influenza and respiratory virus season in Ontario
• List influenza vaccines available in 2017/2018 as part of Ontario’s Universal Influenza Immunization Program and the age groups for which they are recommended
• Explain the use and benefits of antiviral medications for the treatment and prevention of influenza
