A recent article reported the emergence of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance in Escherichia coli in animal, food, and human sources in China. The subsequent identification of this resistance in different parts of the world (including Canada), is of concern as colistin is one of the last effective agents for the treatment of multidrug resistant Gram-negative infections. 

This presentation will provide clinical aspects of the use of colistin for the treatment of Enterobacteriaceae as well as an update of the mechanisms of polymyxin resistance in this bacterial family, including the ‘new’ plasmid-mediated Mcr-1 enzyme.

Presnters: Dr. Samir Patel and Dr. Roberto Melano

Dr. Samir Patel is a clinical microbiologist at Public Health Ontario, where he provides clinical expertise in antimicrobial susceptibility testing, hospital-associated infections, and vector-borne zoonotic diseases. His research interests include studying epidemiology and mechanisms of antibiotic resistant organisms.  In addition, he is interested in using next generation sequencing technology to detect and characterize rare or emerging pathogens.

Dr. Roberto Melano is a molecular microbiologist at Public Health Ontario. He completed his MSc in Molecular Microbiology at the University of San Martin, and his PhD in Microbiology at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. His research focuses onmolecular characterization and horizontal dissemination of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria of clinical interest.

Drs. Patel and Melano are also assistant professors in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto.
