PHO Grand Rounds: The 2020-21 Influenza Season - Hope for the best, plan for the worst (Repeat presentation)

Please note that this is a repeat of the PHO Grand Rounds session scheduled for September 15, 2020 

Very little influenza circulated in the Southern Hemisphere during the 2020 respiratory virus season, potentially due to measures to control COVID-19. It is possible that little influenza will circulate in the Northern Hemisphere as well, however it is important to plan for possible co-circulation of COVID-19, influenza and other respiratory viruses.

This rounds session will highlight: 

• The 2020 Southern Hemisphere influenza season, and the possible implications for the 2020-21 Northern Hemisphere season
• The products available as part of Ontario’s 2020-21 Universal Influenza Immunization Program, including the cell-culture based influenza vaccine
• COVID-19 related precautions  for practitioners providing influenza vaccination
• Influenza treatment and outbreak management in the context of possible co-circulation of influenza, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses
• The Influenza, COVID-19 and other respiratory virus laboratory testing algorithm at Public Health Ontario laboratories for the 2020-21 season

Presenter(s): Dr. Jonathan Gubbay, Dr. Michelle Murti and Dr. Bryna Warshawsky

Dr. Jonathan Gubbay is a Medical Microbiologist at Public Health Ontario’s laboratory, and a paediatric infectious diseases physician. He has been the medical lead of many key programs at PHO’s laboratory, including respiratory viral infections, emerging viruses, respiratory bacteria and gastrointestinal viruses. He is appointed at the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology and Department of Paediatrics at University of Toronto.

Dr. Michelle Murti is a Physician Lead in the Health Protection Department at Public Health Ontario. Her area of expertise includes communicable diseases, surveillance and epidemiology and emergency preparedness. She is crossed appointed in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Bryna Warshawsky is Public Health Physician in the Health Protection Department at Public Health Ontario. She is cross-appointed in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University.

Accreditation

Public Health Ontario Rounds are a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). In order to receive written documentation for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, please check “Yes” beside the question “Do you require CME credits?” on the registration form.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
