OEH Seminar: Cancer surveillance among plastics and rubber manufacturing workers in the Ontario workforce

Occupational exposure to agents used in plastics and rubber manufacturing have been associated with elevated risk of certain cancers. Cancer risks among workers employed in occupations and industries with these exposures were evaluated as part of an ongoing surveillance program in the Ontario workforce. Compared to the rest of the workforce, results showed elevated incidence rates of lung and digestive system cancers among workers employed in plastic and rubber materials processing occupations. Women employed as labourers and moulders in plastic product fabricating occupations had an elevated rate of breast cancer. Findings suggest these occupational groups could be targeted for prevention efforts.
