PHO Rounds: COVID-19 Vaccine Candidates in Development, Special Focus on mRNA and Viral Vector Platforms

Canada has taken a portfolio approach to advance purchase of COVID-19 vaccines that are currently in development, including mRNA vaccines and viral vector-based vaccines. Here we will describe the technical basis of these technologies and discuss the data available to date. 

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the mechanism of action of mRNA and viral vector-based vaccines
  • Discuss the available evidence for the vaccines that are currently in development and may be available in Canada if proven safe and effective
 

 

Présentateur(s): Marina Salvadori and April Killikelly

Marina Salvadori (MD) is a pediatric infectious diseases physician, whose main academic focus has been immunization.  She joined the Public Health Agency of Canada in February 2020 and is the Clinical Lead for COVID-19.

April Killikelly (PhD) is a Scientific Project Coordinator with NACI Secretariat at the Public Health Agency of Canada. Prior to joining PHAC, she trained as a virologist with a specialization in vaccine development. She has a PhD in virology from New York University and a postdoctoral fellowship at the US National Institutes of Health.

Public Health Ontario Rounds are a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). In order to receive written documentation for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, please check “Yes” beside the question “Do you require CME credits?” on the registration form.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
