PHO Rounds: Measles and Rubella Outbreaks: Experiences from the Netherlands
This PHO Rounds covers the epidemiology of measles and rubella outbreaks in the Netherlands over the past several decades. It highlights two under-immunized groups: one with a long history of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks, (many of which spread to Canada and the USA), and another group that has been more recently identified in the Netherlands. An overview of related research, current outbreak control strategies, and interventions to increase vaccine uptake will be provided.
Intended audience: Public health unit staff involved in communicable disease control and immunization programs, epidemiologists, public health physicians and nurses, Medical Officers of Health and Associate Medical Officers of Health.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify the risks of measles and rubella in clustered communities with low vaccine coverage.
- Describe current approaches to measles outbreak control in the Netherlands.
- Describe current approaches to rubella prevention in the Netherlands.
