Yersinia enterocolitica/Y. pseudotuberculosis – Serology

Effective November 28, 2025, Public Health Ontario (PHO) will no longer provide Yersinia enterocolitica or Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serological testing. Any requests for these tests received on or after this date will not be processed and will be cancelled.
This decision is based on a review of current evidence and clinical practice guidelines, which show that serological testing for these organisms has limited diagnostic value—even in atypical or post-infectious presentations.
If infection with Yersinia enterocolitica or Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is suspected, diagnostic testing should be performed using culture or molecular methods on appropriate specimen types. These tests are available through hospital or private laboratories.
PHO does not offer primary laboratory diagnosis of Yersinia enterocolitica or Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, except in the context of a gastrointestinal outbreak investigation supported by a public health unit. Health units may refer to our Enteric Bacteria webpage for additional information.
