PHO Rounds: Taking the Bite Out of Tooth Pain: Using Antibiotics Wisely in Dentistry
World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week (WAAW) aims to increase the awareness and understanding of drug resistance and encouraging best practices to reduce the emergence and spread of this public health threat, particularly antibiotic stewardship. As part of WAAW 2025, this PHO Rounds will focus on appropriate antibiotic use in dentistry. While 10% of all antibiotics prescribed are for dental indications, up to 80% of these prescriptions are for conditions where antibiotics provide little benefit and can increase the risk of harm to patients and the population.
This presentation will explore the latest evidence on appropriate prescribing of antibiotics in dentistry. Attendees will learn about key recommendations, communication approaches for patient expectations and practical tools to integrate stewardship principles into daily practice.
Intended audience: Dentists, public health physicians, primary care physicians, pharmacists, public health professionals with interest in antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define AMR and antibiotic overuse in oral-health care, and list common drivers of inappropriate use.
- Decide when antibiotics are and are not indicated for acute dental complaints.
- Explain the latest evidence to support short course therapy when antibiotics are indicated.
- Use Choosing Wisely tools to support non-antibiotic care, address patient expectations, and improve the quality of care for patients presenting with acute dental complaints.
