Let’s Talk About Syphilis: A Case-based Clinical Overview

Over the last decade, rates of infectious syphilis have been rising in Canada, along with a resurgence of congenital syphilis. Timely screening, diagnosis and treatment can prevent serious adverse outcomes, including congenital syphilis. This session uses an interactive, case-based format to review syphilis screening and treatment recommendations from the National Advisory Committee for Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (NAC-STBBI). It discusses the interpretation of syphilis tests, including novel point-of-care tests, and provides an approach to staging syphilis infections. Dr. Chittle will share syphilis resources for healthcare providers from the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Intended audience: Public Health Practitioners, Clinicians and Researchers, Public Health Unit staff working in Sexually Transmitted and Blood Borne Infections (STBBI)

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify and implement national screening and treatment recommendations for syphilis in their public health practice
• Explain the role of epidemiologic information, clinical exam findings, and the interpretation of test results in the diagnosis of syphilis
• Support the treatment and follow-up of individuals diagnosed with syphilis infections using national clinical recommendations

Presenter(s): Andrea Chittle

Dr. Andrea Chittle, MD, MPH, CCFP, is a Medical Advisor in the Sexually Transmitted and Blood-borne Infections Surveillance Division at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). She completed her Family Medicine residency at McMaster University and a Master of Public Health at the University of Waterloo. She has worked as a consultant physician in the sexual health programs of three Ontario Public Health Units and operated an HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Clinic. In her role at PHAC, she has been involved in the development of health care provider resources, including a syphilis toolkit.
