PHO Rounds: Mpox: Outbreak, Response, and Vaccine Effectiveness

In the Spring of 2022, an explosive global epidemic of mpox infection emerged, primarily in gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM). Ontario was among the first jurisdictions to see large numbers of cases, and a variety of civil society, clinical, public health and research activities rapidly mobilized in response. This session will review current knowledge about the epidemic, including key epidemiologic and clinical features while further highlighting emerging findings about medical countermeasures including tecovirimat for therapy and Imvamune™ vaccine for prevention. A critical aspect of the response that will be highlighted is the importance of grounding public health work in community engagement principles.

Intended audience: Medical Officers of Health/Associate Medical Officers of Health (MOH/AMOHs), Public Health Unit (PHU) staff (particularly those working in Sexually Transmitted Blood Borne Infections (STBBI) and Infectious Diseases), Researchers, Physicians, Nurses, Epidemiologists and Community Health Staff

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe the evolving epidemiology of mpox in Ontario and globally with a focus on the 2022 outbreak
• Identify the key clinical characteristics of mpox infection
• Discuss recent evidence and advances in our understanding of medical countermeasures including antivirals and vaccines against mpox

Présentateur(s): Dr. Darrell H. S. Tan

Dr. Darrell H. S. Tan, MD, FRCPC, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. He is an infectious diseases physician and Clinician-Scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital, where he leads the Options Collaboratory in HIV/STI Treatment and Prevention Science (www.optionslab.ca). His research focuses on clinical trials and implementation science in the areas of HIV prevention and treatment, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and COVID-19. Dr. Tan holds a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in HIV Prevention and STIs, is Co-Lead of the HIV Prevention Core of the CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network and is a member of the Governing Council of the International AIDS Society.

PHO Grand Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
