PHO Webinar: Engaging Policymakers on the Commercial Determinants of Health: Lessons from Global Tobacco Control
The commercial determinants of health (CDOH) has become a unifying concept bringing together researchers studying a broad range of public health concerns. These include substance use (e.g. tobacco, alcohol, prescription drugs, cannabis), unhealthy products (e.g. sugary drinks, ultra highly processed foods), services (e.g., social media, privatisation of healthcare) and other sources of human health risks from for-profit activities (e.g. road traffic accidents, gun violence, air pollution). Opportunities for change however, require closer engagement between researchers and the policymakers responsible for shaping priorities, creating regulatory frameworks and allocating resources in the public interest. While policymakers concerned with public health are a starting point, effectively addressing the CDOH requires engagement with a broader policy community. This Public Health Ontario (PHO) webinar focuses on lessons for effective policy engagement on the CDOH drawn from experiences at the global, national and local levels.
Intended audience: Public health practitioners, public health decision-makers, and researchers
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define the commercial determinants of health (CDOH) and how they support the understanding of key factors shaping health and disease in the 21st century.
- Describe how the CDOH can contribute to both harms and benefits to population health.
- Recognize the opportunities and challenges for bringing together research and policy communities on the CDOH.
- Identify strategies for using the CDOH to build policy alliances across different public health issues, and between public health and other policy communities.
