PHO Webinar: Trauma-and Violence-Informed Approaches to Completing Mental Health Assessments: GAD-7 and C-SSRS
This session will explore the application of trauma- and violence-informed (TVIC) principles in administering mental health assessment tools, such as the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) Scale and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). Practical guidance will be offered on introducing these tools to clients, clarifying their purpose, and effectively discussing the findings. Strategies for addressing situations that may elicit stressful or traumatic responses during assessments will be explored. Lastly, tips for engaging in these conversations while prioritizing emotional safety and fostering a therapeutic relationship will be shared.
Intended audience: Public health nurses, team leads, supervisors, and managers in Ontario’s Healthy Babies, Healthy Children and Nurse-Family Partnership programs, as well as any other community providers offering mental health support during the perinatal period.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the use of trauma-and violence-informed (TVIC) principles in administering mental health assessment tools, including the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) Scale and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS).
- Describe strategies to introduce these tools to clients, explain their purpose, and discuss their findings.
- Identify ways to engage in client discussions while prioritizing emotional safety and cultivating a therapeutic relationship.
Présentateur(s): Jennifer Olarte-Godoy
Jennifer Olarte-Godoy, RN, MN, CPMHN(c), is a Nurse Educator with the Mental Health and Addictions Program at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor (Adjunct) at McMaster University. She earned a Master of Nursing degree from the University of Toronto, specializing in Addiction Studies. Jennifer has been a mental health nurse for the past 14 years and has clinical experience in psychiatric emergency services, acute psychiatry, and mood disorders.
