Every day, public health nurses and other professionals provide care to people experiencing gender-based violence (GBV) and using substances in ways that affect their health. This presentation will invite participants to deepen their knowledge about the intersections between GBV and substance use, and to make their practice more effective. A range of informational resources and tools will be shared to support trauma- and violence-informed, destigmatizing approaches to promoting substance use health in the context of GBV.

Intended audience: Public health nurses, supervisors, managers, family visitors from Ontario’s Healthy Babies Healthy Children, Nurse-Family Partnership, and Healthy Growth and Development programs. Health care professionals working with pregnant individuals/women or families may also be interested in attending.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify the key intersecting dynamics between gender-based violence and substance use.
• Describe the impact of these dynamics on health and health care, and the implications for public health practice.
• Select resources and tools for use in further strengthening their practice.

Dr. Colleen Varcoe RN, PhD, FCAHS, FCAN is a professor emeritus in the University of British Columbia School of Nursing. Her work aims to decrease inequity and violence, including interpersonal and structural forms of violence such as racism and stigma related to poverty, pain and substance use. Her research includes studies of the risks for and health effects of violence, and promoting health for women who experience violence, especially Indigenous women. She has developed diverse interventions including organizational interventions to promote equity-oriented health care.

Nancy Lipsky works across research, community engagement, and systems change to reduce stigma and structural inequities in health and social services. She spent over a decade at the Women’s Health Research Institute managing health-equity projects before joining EQUIP Health Care. She now manages national knowledge mobilization initiatives that support the implementation of equity-oriented, trauma- and violence-informed care.
