PHO Rounds: Tick-Borne Diseases in Ontario: A 2026 Update

Tick-borne diseases are an important public health issue in Ontario as established areas of blacklegged tick populations expand across the province. This PHO Rounds will provide an overview of tick-borne diseases of public health significance, including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis and Powassan virus disease. It will review current trends, geographic distribution, and populations at risk, alongside an overview of laboratory testing methods. Participants will also be introduced to tick surveillance-derived risk area maps and information available in the Ontario Vector Borne Disease Tool, to support interpretation of tick-borne disease data, surveillance planning and risk communication.

Intended Audience:
Public health unit professionals working in Enteric, Zoonotic and Vector-Borne Diseases, public health physicians and nurses, primary care physicians.

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the current epidemiology of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis and Powassan virus disease in Ontario.
  • Use the Ontario Vector-Borne Disease Tool to identify tick-borne disease trends and geographic risk relevant to public health practice.
  • Identify the main laboratory testing methods and testing indications for Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Powassan virus disease.

Présentateur(s): Caitlin Johnson, Dr. Richard Mather and Dr. Antoine Corbeil

Caitlin Johnson, MPH is an Epidemiologist working with the Enteric, Zoonotic and Vector-Borne Diseases (EZVBD) team at Public Health Ontario (PHO). 

Richard Mather, MD is a Public Health Physician in the Communicable Disease Control Department at PHO, where he supports vector-borne diseases. 

Antoine Corbeil, MD is a Medical Microbiologist at PHO. He leads the parasitology, enteric bacteriology, point-of-care testing, and laboratory medical education portfolios.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Grand Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
