With a changing climate, heat is an increasing public health concern in Ontario, as in many other jurisdictions. This PHO Rounds will present highlights from a population-based time-series study of daily non-accidental mortality across 49 Ontario census divisions from 1996 to 2019. The project team studied the effects of daily increase in heat as well as heatwaves and their timing, duration and intensity to characterize heat-related mortality in Ontario and support public health partners with province-specific evidence to inform consideration of heat warnings to the public.

Intended Audience:

Public health epidemiologists, public health inspectors, public health nurses, clinicians, public health professionals working in environmental and occupational health, Medical Officers of Health (MOH) and Associate Medical Officers of Health (AMOH).

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe the impact of contemporary ambient temperature on non-accidental mortality in Ontario.
• Identify regional differences in heat-related mortality risk across Ontario’s heat regions.
• Assess the added mortality risk associated with heatwave duration, intensity, and timing.

Dr. JinHee Kim is Physician Lead of Population Health at Public Health Ontario (PHO) and an Assistant Professor (status only) in the Clinical Public Health Division at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Faculty of Medicine.
