Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing threats to global health, requiring coordinated action across healthcare, public health, policy, and community sectors. Drawing on the United Kingdom's (UK) experience, this PHO Rounds will explore how national public health organizations can lead and sustain antimicrobial stewardship  initiatives at scale. The session will highlight successful strategies, partnerships, surveillance programs, and capacity-building efforts that have supported AMR mitigation in the UK. Using practical examples and lessons learned, participants will gain insights into the unique role of public health in driving stewardship and strengthening system-wide responses to AMR.

Intended Audience:
Infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship professionals and pharmacists. Public health clinicians; public health professionals with interest in anti-microbial stewardship; Medical Officers of Health (MOHs)/Associate Medical Officers of Health (AMOHs), policymakers; and decision-makers involved in antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, and health system improvement.

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

• Describe the public health burden of antimicrobial resistance and its implications for health systems.
• Summarize key UK public health strategies and initiatives used to advance antimicrobial stewardship at national and regional levels.
• Explain the role of public health organizations in AMR surveillance, stewardship leadership, partnership development, and workforce capacity building.
• Identify opportunities to adapt successful public health approaches from the UK to strengthen AMR mitigation efforts in Ontario and other jurisdictions.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Grand Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
