PHO Rounds: The 2022 Mpox Outbreaks in Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal: Impact of Sexual Networks and Interventions on Transmission Dynamics

The 2022–2023 global mpox outbreak disproportionately affected gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). The outbreak in Canada’s three largest cities was met with swift community and public health response. This PHO Rounds will present our work using longitudinal data from respondent-driven samples of GBM, surveillance data, and mathematical models of mpox transmission and control to explore differences in GBM’s sexual partner distributions across cities and over time, and how they shaped mpox’s transmission dynamics. This Rounds will also look at the relative contribution of changes in sexual behaviors, contact tracing/isolation, and first-dose vaccination on mpox transmission in Canada.

Intended audience: Clinicians, public health practitioners, public health physicians and nurses, researchers, epidemiologists, public health unit staff with interest in public health surveillance.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role that sexual networks play in shaping transmission of sexually transmitted infections.
  • Recognize how mathematical models can help understand dynamics of infectious diseases.
  • Assess the relative importance of the varied interventions discussed for mpox.
