PHO Rounds: A Model for Collaboration: Initiatives of the Black, African, and Caribbean Community Health and Wellness Collaborative in Peel

The Black, African, and Caribbean Community Health and Wellness Collaborative (BAC CHWC) convened in 2021 as a partnership between community organizations and Region of Peel staff to support the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations. Coming out of the emergency response, the Collaborative has evolved to support broader health and wellness needs while working towards creating equitable health outcomes for BAC communities in Peel. This PHO Rounds highlights the initiatives of the Collaborative and shares lessons learned in creating a sustainable connection with BAC communities in Peel.

Intended audience: Medical Officers of Health (MOH), Associate Medical officers of Health (AMOH), public health professionals with interest in health equity, policy makers, and decision-makers.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe the public health evidence and rationale for establishing the Black, African, and Caribbean Community Health and Wellness Collaborative (BAC CHWC) in Peel.
  • Explain the strategies used by BAC CHWC to promote equitable health outcomes for BAC communities in Peel.
  • Describe challenges faced and solutions implemented to maintain trust and collaboration beyond emergency response.
  • Explore how these approaches can be adapted to other contexts for advancing health equity in their public health practice.

Présentateur(s): Cheryl LaRonde-Ogilvie, Angela Carter and Scott Fry

Cheryl LaRonde-Ogilvie is a Registered Nurse who is passionate about health equity and improving health outcomes for marginalized communities, with a focus on Black populations. After completing her undergraduate studies in Health Sciences and Nursing, Cheryl pursued her Master’s Degree in Nursing, focused on leadership in policy and education. She has worked in a variety of roles across the health system dedicating the bulk of her career in the public health sector. Currently, she is an Advisor in the Health Equity, Partnerships and Innovation section of the Health Services department at Peel Region.

Angela Carter is the former executive director of Roots Community Services (RootsCS) Inc. who now works to help develop the Black Health and Social Services (BHSS) Hub in Peel Region. She is currently the Advisor, Strategic Initiatives with RootsCS and a Research Associate with the Family and Child Health Initiative at the Institute for Better Health, Trillium Health Partners. A specialist in social and behaviour change, she actively advocates for the upliftment and advancement of Black, African and Caribbean people and works tirelessly to dismantle anti-Black racism, systemic discrimination and other barriers that negatively impact members of racialized and marginalized communities. Angela is a former journalist who has also authored/co-authored peer-reviewed journal articles on the need for equity and systemic change in the healthcare system.

Scott Fry is a long serving public sector professional with 15 years of experience in municipal government working in Health Services and Strategic Communications. In his current role of Advisor, Health Services, Peel Region, he leads strategic projects to drive health system collaboration, health equity, and community engagement. Scott possesses a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Victoria, a Bachelor’s in Media Studies from the University of Guelph, and a Diploma in Public Relations from Humber College.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Grand Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
