By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

• Identify barriers to vaccination faced by newcomer families.
• Develop and potentially implement evidence-based, community-informed strategies to improve newcomer vaccination experiences.
• Recognize the need for community consultation when developing population-specific guidance, and indicate methods that can result in strong community engagement.

Dr. Ripudaman Singh Minhas, MD, MPH, FRCPC, FAAP is a Developmental Paediatrician with the Women’s and Children’s Health Program at St Michael’s Hospital and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Toronto. His research interests are in the development, behaviour, disability, and rehabilitation of children in urban settings and in newcomer immigrant and refugee families. His team uses Community-Based Participatory Research principles to guide the co-creation and implementation of family-based interventions and the evolution of health systems. His current focus is in supporting parenting in communities experiencing marginalization. This includes “Our Kids’ Health“, a social media-based health literacy program to support families.

Dr. Iryna Dvoretska, MD is a Research Coordinator with Our Kids’ Health at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, where she supports initiatives aimed at improving access to culturally and linguistically relevant health information for diverse communities. She coordinates Ukrainian Kids’ Health and contributes to research, knowledge mobilization, community engagement, and the development of evidence-based health resources. Her interests focus on child and family health, health communication, health equity, and community-engaged approaches to improving access to evidence-based health information.

Kar Yin Michelle Au, MA is a Research Coordinator with Our Kids' Health at St. Michael’s Hospital, where she supports Cantonese- and Mandarin-speaking communities through culturally tailored health resources and outreach. Her research interests include child development, the social determinants of health, and health communication. With extensive experience in child health research and knowledge mobilization, Michelle is dedicated to promoting the well-being of all children and families through community-based approaches.

Dr. Chuck Hui, MD, FRCPC, FAAP, FIDSA is a pediatric infectious diseases physician, former division chief at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and Full Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Ottawa. An active clinician and educator, he advances knowledge on migrant health, childhood immunization, and infectious disease, advising national societies, governments, and intergovernmental organizations.

He co-chairs the Migration Health and Development Research Initiative, co-edited Kids New to Canada, and chairs the Canadian Paediatric Society’s Caring for Kids New to Canada Taskforce.

PHO Grand Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
