PHO Rounds: Legionella Risk Management and Investigations in Health Care Facilities

Legionella is a bacteria that resides in the environment, usually contracted by inhalation of contaminated aerosolized water from human made water systems. Exposure can result in Pontiac fever, a self-limited flu-like illness or Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia. This session will provide a practical overview of public health investigation of legionellosis in health care facilities, including assessment of the epidemiology, potential environmental sources, appropriate clinical and environmental testing, and environmental control and remediation measures.

Présentateur(s): Kelly Briscoe and Maurice Coppin

Kelly Briscoe, MSc, CPHI(C) is a Senior Program Specialist on the Environmental and Occupational Health Team at Public Health Ontario, where she supports Ontario public health units during Legionella investigations. Kelly holds a Master of Science degree in Food Safety and Quality Assurance, a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and Safety and a Bachelor of Arts in Community Health Sciences. She is a certified Public Health Inspector (PHI) with over 18 years of experience in the environmental health field.

Maurice Coppin, RN, MN is a Communicable Diseases Consultant at Public Health Ontario, where he supports outbreak response, disease surveillance, and environmental risk assessments. Maurice holds a Master of Nursing and possesses a strong clinical background, contributing over a decade of experience in infectious disease control and public health preparedness. He has led and supported Legionella outbreak investigations across Ontario, contributing to environmental sampling strategies, exposure location assessments, and mitigation efforts. He is actively involved in surveillance and reporting of invasive Group A Streptococcal disease and other communicable threats. His work informs provincial best practices and strengthens Ontario’s public health response capacity.

Public Health Ontario Grand Rounds are a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). In order to receive written documentation for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, please check “Yes” beside the question “Do you require CME credits?” on the registration form.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Grand Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
