Giardiasis

(Giardia)

Giardiasis is an enteric disease caused when a person ingests the parasite Giardia, usually from water or food that has been contaminated. Person-to-person spread can also occur, including in child care settings. Symptoms of infection include diarrhea, gas, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting. Giardiasis can be prevented through careful hand washing and avoiding drinking untreated water.
