PHO Microbiology Rounds: One Health in Action

In this presentation, Dr. Olea Popelka will present the core principles and foundations of the One Health approach which recognizes that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. Dr. Popelka will use examples to show how the One Health approach has been applied (locally, nationally, and globally) to address health challenges at the interface of people, wildlife and domestic species and the environment. Emphasis will be placed on the integration of academia with relevant non-academic stakeholders/knowledge user.

Intended audience: Microbiologists, epidemiologists, Public Health staff working with infectious disease, laboratory staff, Public Health physicians, Public Health staff working in Environmental Health.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the One Health approach and its key concepts.
  • Discuss how interdependence between people, other animal species, and environmental health under the One Health approach.
  • Understand the importance and relevance of using the One Health approach to address health challenges affecting people, other animal species, and the environment.

Presenter(s): Dr. Francisco Olea Popelka

Dr. Francisco Olea Popelka, DVM, MSc, PhD, is an Associate Professor and the Beryl Ivey Endowed Chair in One Health in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University in London, Ontario. During his career as a veterinary epidemiologist, Dr. Olea Popelka has applied epidemiological tools, skills and a collaborative One Health approach to address challenges at the interface of livestock, wildlife, and humans in different environments around the world.

Public Health Ontario Rounds are a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). In order to receive written documentation for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, please check “Yes” beside the question “Do you require CME credits?” on the registration form.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
