PHO Rounds: Overview of Influenza, COVID-19, and RSV Immunization for the 2024-25 Respiratory Season
This PHO Rounds will provide an overview of the influenza, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines to be used in the 2024-25 respiratory season. Information on RSV prevention in infants through the introduction of an RSV monoclonal antibody product (nirsevimab) starting this fall will also be summarized.
The Rounds will also review the immunization products to be available this fall in Ontario, summarize the evidence supporting their use, and highlight new recommendations and changes to the immunization landscape for the 2024-25 respiratory season. The presentations will be followed by a panel that will include all presenters, in addition to Dr. Daniel Warshafsky, Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, to answer questions from participants.
Intended audience: Public health units staff working in infectious disease, primary healthcare providers, healthcare staff in acute care, long term care and congregate living settings, public health physicians and nurses, MOHs/AMOHs
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Describe the immunization products to be available in Ontario in the Fall of 2024 for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV 2.
Summarize NACI’s recommendations and provincial guidance for Ontario’s influenza, COVID-19, and RSV programs 3.
Identify resources to support immunizers in their delivery of Ontario’s influenza, COVID-19, and RSV immunization programs in the Fall of 2024.
Presenter(s): Dr. Richard Mather, Dr. Sarah Wilson, Dr. Reed Morrison and Dr. Daniel Warshafsky
Dr. Richard Mather is a Public Health Physician in Health Protection at Public Health Ontario where he supports the Communicable Diseases team. He is an Assistant Professor at Queen’s University in the Department of Family Medicine and has an MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Dr. Sarah Wilson is a Public Health Physician in Health Protection at Public Health Ontario who collaborates with the Immunization and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases team. She is an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto and a Senior Adjunct Scientist at ICES. She is a member of Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) and has been chair of the NACI COVID-19 vaccine working group since 2022.
Dr. Reed Morrison is a Public Health Physician in Health Protection at Public Health Ontario working with the Immunization and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases team and the Communicable Diseases team. He is an Assistant Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University.
Dr. Daniel Warshafsky is an Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health and oversees the immunization portfolio in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health at Ontario’s Ministry of Health. He is an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Toronto and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa.

PHO Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
