Update on PHO IPAC program changes

Announcements

14 Nov 2016

PHO has implemented a revised model for our infection prevention and control (IPAC) program – one that will improve our ability to serve stakeholders and further strengthen IPAC across the province to help keep Ontarians safe and healthy.

During consultations across the province, we heard about the changing face of IPAC. Clients talked to us about challenges like antimicrobial resistance and emerging pathogens; more outpatient procedures; new products and medical equipment; updated standards, directives and guidelines; surveillance of health care-associated infections; and further integration of services across health care settings as Ontario implements the Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care.

We are evolving to continue to deliver on our mandate to develop evidence-informed guidance to support the adoption of IPAC best practices in all health care settings; create practical tools, training materials, and other resources to translate and implement best practice guidance; and provide scientific and technical advice on IPAC questions and help you prepare for and respond to IPAC lapses and emerging issues.

Our approach combines IPAC expertise at both the provincial and regional level. PHO’s Regional Infection Control Networks have realigned into five regional offices, working with local health care organizations and public health units to foster collaboration and increase uptake of best practices through professional development, local communities of practice and other networks; and to help respond to inquiries and issues. The regional teams coordinate closely with our provincial-level experts to prevent, monitor and support lapses and outbreak investigations, provide data to support decision-making, inform IPAC-related research on current and emerging issues, and develop resources based on field needs.
