Indigenous Lead Talking Circle(s): Overview, Stories, & Reflections

Please join us for the COM-CAP (Community Opioid/Overdose Capacity Building) project’s first event as part of the ‘Learning & Sharing Series’. This quarterly series focuses on integrating Indigenous knowledge and experiences with capacity building and actions around reducing overdose/opioid harms.

2-Spirited Peoples of the First Nations will share the “Indigenous Lead Talking Circle(s) Report.” This report summarizes discussions and stories from an Indigenous Talking Circle with service providers and clients, which was organized in partnership with the COM-CAP project. Attendees will hear a report summary and stories on gaps, needs and ways that the project and partners can build action and accountability around reducing substance-related harms. In addition to the presentations, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in facilitated discussions on how the report can help inform their own work and progress around integrating Indigenous expertise and experiences in their work.

Note: This session will be recorded for ongoing training and educational purposes.

This webinar is being hosted and recorded on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Toronto continues to be home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Intended audience:

Those involved with drug strategies in Ontario, Public Health Unit teams working in drug strategies and/or involved in harm reduction, people who use drugs and COM-CAP (Community Opioid/Overdose Capacity Building) project partners (3 community-based initiatives, Advisory Committee, Scientific Team, OCAD University’s Health Design Studio, University of Toronto’s Strategy Design and Evaluation Initiative).

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1.  Describe key stories and recommendations from the “Indigenous Lead Talking Circle(s) Report”
  2. Understand experiences of Indigenous communities in mitigating overdose/opioid harms
  3. Build linkages between webinar content and internal organizational action on culturally safe practices and meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities

Presenter(s): Saige McMahon and Sarah Anderson
