PHO Rounds: Vision 2030: Moving Data into Public Health Action

Vision 2030 is a Public Health Agency of Canada initiative that outlines the future of public health surveillance in Canada by 2030. The final report, published in February 2025, reflects the input from approximately 1,800 participants across Canada. This PHO Rounds provides an overview of the Vision 2030 development, a depiction of a high-functioning public health surveillance “system of systems” and showcases how ongoing initiatives by public health partners in Canada are addressing the persistent challenges in public health and contributing towards achieving the vision. 

Intended Audience: Public health trainees, public health unit staff, medical officers of health 

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the method and efforts involved in developing a collaborative vision for public health surveillance in Canada by 2030. 
  • Identify the vision components, including the desired states and characteristics of a high-functioning public health surveillance “system of systems”. 
  • Recognize opportunities for action that address the persistent challenges identified and ongoing efforts that contribute to advancing Vision 2030. 
 
 

Presenter(s): Dr. David Buckeridge

Dr. David Buckeridge is a Professor in the School of Population and Global Health at McGill University in Montreal, where he directs the Surveillance Lab, an interdisciplinary group that develops, implements, and evaluates novel computational methods for population health surveillance. He also directs the Research Data Warehouse at the McGill University Health Center and is an Associate Member with Mila. As a clinician-scientist, his research and practice focus on the informatics of health surveillance and disease control and he holds a Canada Research Chair in Health Informatics and Data Science. He is currently the Executive Scientific Director of the Science and Policy Integration Branch at the Public Health Agency of Canada. Dr. Buckeridge has a M.D. from Queen's University, a M.Sc. in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical informatics from Stanford University.
