About Ontario Immunization Advisory Committee (OIAC)
The Ontario Immunization Advisory Committee (OIAC) was established in August 2021 at the request of the Chief Medical Officer of Health. The Committee provides scientific and technical advice to Public Health Ontario on vaccines and immunization matters, including program implementation in Ontario, priority populations, clinical guidance, and vaccine safety and effectiveness.
OIAC’s work focuses ’on publicly funded vaccines and immunization programs in Ontario, and those under consideration for new programming. OIAC members have multidisciplinary expertise in public health, primary care, nursing, pharmacy, infectious diseases, medical microbiology, epidemiology, immunology, vaccinology, health economics, and quantitative methods.
PHO is currently recruiting exceptional candidates to join the OIAC volunteer external advisory committee in the following role:
- Expert in Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) and Immunization:
- Northern or Indigenous Health
- Local Public Health Unit
Member position: Expert in Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) and Immunization – Northern or Indigenous Health
OIAC meets at least quarterly for two-hour meetings, held virtually via videoconference. Membership terms are two years in length with the possibility of renewal.
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Medical or nursing degree (e.g., MD, BScN).
- Minimum of five years of experience providing clinical primary care or public health services in northern, rural, remote, and/or fly-in communities, such as through nursing stations, community health centres, Indigenous health authorities, local public health unit, hospital-based primary care, or similar settings.
- Currently employed in a primary care organization or public health unit in Northern Ontario.
- Demonstrated expertise in immunization and vaccine-preventable diseases, grounded in clinical and community practice.
- Indigenous lived experience and/or professional experience working within Indigenous-governed or Indigenous-serving health systems is preferred.
- For Physician Candidates: Certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (or equivalent) or fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) with specialization in a relevant specialty (e.g., public health and preventive medicine, infectious diseases, pediatrics).
- For Nursing Candidates: Significant leadership/decision-support experience related to immunization and VPD in a northern primary care setting or local public health unit is required.
- Candidates must be currently registered and in good standing with the appropriate professional regulatory body.
- Demonstrated credibility as an immunization/VPD expert among peers with ability to engage professional networks.
- Ability to interpret and apply evidence to practical program and policy questions and contribute constructively in a multidisciplinary expert committee setting.
- Be able and willing to comply with PHO’s Conflict of Interest Rules and Confidentiality requirements.

Member Position: Expert in Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) and Immunization – Local Public Health Unit
OIAC meets at least quarterly for two-hour meetings, held virtually via videoconference. Member appointments are two years in length, with the possibility of renewal.
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Medical or nursing degree (e.g. MD, BScN).
- Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in immunization/VPD within local public health or a community health setting (excluding professional training period).
- Current employment with a local public health unit in Ontario.
- Demonstrated knowledge of publicly funded vaccines and vaccination schedules, public health vaccine programs, and/or immunization monitoring and surveillance in a public health setting.
- Strong understanding of Ontario’s immunization context, including program delivery, vaccine administration, and implementation considerations.
- For Physician Candidates: Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) with a specialization in public health and preventive medicine or community medicine.
- For Nursing Candidates: Significant leadership/decision-support experience related to immunization and VPD in a public health unit is required. Graduate degree or certification in public health, epidemiology, infectious and communicable disease prevention, immunization practice or related area is an asset.
- Candidates must be currently registered and in good standing with the appropriate professional regulatory body.
- Demonstrated credibility as an immunization/VPD expert among peers with ability to engage professional networks.
- Ability to interpret and apply evidence to practical program and policy questions and contribute constructively in a multidisciplinary expert committee setting.
- Be able and willing to comply with PHO’s Conflict of Interest Rules and Confidentiality requirements.
