PHO Rounds: Respiratory Season 2025–26, Part 2: Overview of Seasonal Respiratory Virus Immunizations

This PHO Rounds provides an overview of key information and advice for influenza, COVID-19 and RSV immunization for the 2025–26 respiratory season. The session reviews the immunization products available this fall in Ontario, summarizes the evidence supporting their use, and highlights new recommendations and changes to the immunization landscape for the 2025–26 respiratory season. The presentations will be followed by a panel that will include all presenters and Dr. Daniel Warshafsky, Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, to answer questions from participants.

Intended audience: Public health unit staff working in infectious disease; primary healthcare providers, healthcare staff in acute care, long term care and congregate living settings; public health professionals working in the area of respiratory viruses or immunization; Medical Officers of Health and Associate Medical Officers of Health.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the immunization products available in Ontario for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV for the 2025–26 respiratory season.
  • Summarize NACI’s recommendations and provincial guidance for Ontario’s influenza, COVID-19, and RSV immunization programs for the 2025–26 respiratory season.
  • Identify resources to support immunizers in their delivery of Ontario’s influenza, COVID-19, and RSV immunization programs during the 2025–26 respiratory season.

Presenter(s): Dr. Reed Morrison, Dr. Adrina Zhong and Dr. Daniel Warshafsky

Dr. Reed Morrison, MD, MPH, MHA, CCFP, FRCPC is a Public Health Physician in Communicable Disease Control at Public Health Ontario working with the Immunization and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases team and the Communicable Diseases team. He is an Assistant Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University.

Dr. Adrina Zhong, MD, MPH, CCFP, FRCPC is a Public Health Physician in Communicable Disease Control at Public Health Ontario where she supports the Communicable Diseases team and the Enteric, Zoonotic and Vector-Borne Diseases team.

Dr. Daniel Warshafsky, MD, MPH, CCFP (SEM), Dip Sport Med, FRCPC is an Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health and oversees the immunization portfolio in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health at Ontario’s Ministry of Health. He is an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Toronto and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa.

Public Health Ontario Rounds are a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). In order to receive written documentation for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, please check “Yes” beside the question “Do you require CME credits?” on the registration form.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
