Ontario’s Trans PULSE Project and the national Trans PULSE Canada study were community-based research projects that generated a total of five quantitative or qualitative data sets from 2006-2020. Studies were designed to collect “missing” data on trans and non-binary Canadians for use in conjunction with Statistics Canada data, as well as to collect data on community- and subgroup-specific factors that may impact health, including forms of social exclusion. An overview of these projects and the resulting publications they will be presented, all of which may be used as resources to inform public health practice.

Individuals working in health equity, sexual health, surveillance/population health assessment, and related research

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe the contributions of the Trans PULSE Project to public health data on transgender residents of Ontario.
• Describe the contributions of Trans PULSE Canada to public health data on transgender and non-binary residents of Canada.
• Identify trans and non-binary data resources to inform public health practice.
• Describe key health inequalities faced by trans and non-binary Canadians.

Greta Bauer, PhD, MPH is an interdisciplinary senior epidemiologist with a focus on research methods for studying health and social marginalization. She has held a CIHR Sex and Gender Science Chair at Western University, and an Endowed Chair in Sexual Health at the University of Minnesota.
