Event Details

Infection prevention and control (IPAC) lapses have been investigated in a variety of clinical and personal service settings in Ontario. During investigations, public health units (PHUs) can request IPAC lapse risk assessment support from Public Health Ontario (PHO) to help support decision making related to patient notification and testing for bloodborne infections. This PHO Rounds will summarize trends in IPAC lapse risk assessments that PHO has supported highlighting the settings involved and common deviations from IPAC best practices identified.

Intended Audience:
Public health unit staff working in IPAC, Medical Officers of Health (MOHs)/Associated Medical Officers of Health (AMOHs), regulated health professionals in clinical and personal service settings, public health inspectors.

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

• Describe settings where IPAC lapses are occurring most frequently.
• Summarize common deviations from IPAC best practice observed during IPAC lapse investigations.
• Identify setting-specific training and capacity building priorities to help strengthen IPAC programs and preventing future lapses in Ontario.

David Ryding, BHSC, BASC, CPHI(C), CIC, AL-CIP, MPH is an Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Specialist on the IPAC Lapse and System Support team at Public Health Ontario. David joined PHO as an Infection Control Consultant in 2013. Prior to this, he worked as a health inspector in the Communicable Disease Department at the legacy Hastings and Prince Edward Health Unit. He became a certified Public Health Inspector in 2007, has maintained his Certification in Infection Control (CIC) since 2009, and achieved the Advanced Leadership Certification in Infection Control (AL-CIP) in 2025. David also has a Master of Public Health degree from Queen’s University.
