PHO Rounds: The Digital Determinants of Health in the Canadian Landscape

The digital determinants of health (DDOH) are increasingly shaping the conditions in which health is achieved around the world, and their impacts on public health are profound. In this PHO Rounds, Dr. Shaw will summarize recent work on the concept of the DDOH and elaborate on their relevance to the Canadian context. He will present emerging thinking about governance and intervention in the DDOH and describe implications for public health policy and practice. He will conclude by illustrating future directions demanding attention in this important domain.

Intended audience:
Public health physicians, policymakers and researchers.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Define the digital determinants of health.
  • Describe the relevance of the digital determinants of health to the Canadian public health landscape.
  • Describe an intervention framework for the digital determinants of health.
  • Identify examples of the digital determinants of health.

 

Presenter(s): Dr. Jay Shaw

Jay Shaw, PhD is Acting Director of the Joint Centre for Bioethics in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at University of Toronto, and Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Responsible Health Innovation in the Department of Physical Therapy at University of Toronto. He is adjunct Scientist at the Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care. He sits on the World Health Organization Expert Group on Ethics and Governance of AI for Health.
