Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases

Vector-borne and zoonotic diseases are caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites that are transmitted to humans from animals or insects. Some diseases that originate in animals must be transmitted through a “vector” (e.g., mosquito, tick) in order to infect a human.

We provide public health workers with expertise, support and resources for preventing and controlling vector-borne and zoonotic diseases.

Map provides provincial picture of where there are established blacklegged tick populations, the tick vector responsible for four Diseases of Public Health Significance: anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Lyme disease and Powassan virus infection.
